Dracula 4: The Shadow of the Dragon
First posted on 01 August 2013. Last updated on 15 May 2014.
The game begins with a series of cinematic cut scenes. The first scene shows a cargo ship sinking somewhere in the North Atlantic amid a violent ocean storm. Aboard the ship is a collection of 15 priceless paintings belonging to Professor Vambery. Both the professor, who is also aboard the ship, and the paintings are presumed to have been lost to sea. The second scene shows the Director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art calling Ellen Cross, an art expert and restorer working for the museum, about the shipwreck. The third scene shows Ellen, who is revealed to be suffering from a terminal but undisclosed blood dyscrasia, receiving the last supply of medicines for her disease, which are no longer being manufactured, from her doctor, Doctor Henderson. The fourth scene shows Ellen receiving another phone call from the museum director, several weeks later, with the news that one of the paintings from the missing Vambery collection has now resurfaced in Budapest, Hungary. She is told to travel there to authenticate the painting. The final scene shows Ellen arriving at Budapest. She is greeted there by the Inspector of Police, Bizlos Lazlo.

General tips
Select Options in the Main Menu to change the game settings. When playing the game, the menu can be accessed by pressing Esc.
The game can be played in either Casual or Adventure mode. In Casual mode, hotspots are displayed on screen as markers, and some puzzles can be skipped after a period of wait time when a lever appears. In Adventure mode, hotspots are displayed only when the cursor is hovered over them, and no puzzles can be skipped.
Left click the mouse on a hotspot to select from the available actions and to perform the selected action (such as to pick up, to examine, to speak, and to use).
Exhaust all dialogs when talking to characters to uncover key information. Failure to do so may prevent you from progressing through the game and force you to backtrack later on to locate the missing information. A transcript of all spoken dialogs can be accessed in the inventory.
You cannot lose the game by dying. An automatic save is triggered when you exit the game. Automatic checkpoints are also created from which you can select to load when you resume the game. You cannot make manual saves.
The game has a total score of 300 points and awards a total of 20 trophies. Some trophies can be missed if certain unwanted actions are done, even though the game may continue to progress. Completing the optional prologue (Budapest) earns 43 points and awards 1 trophy. If the prologue is skipped, the points are instead credited automatically to the base score but no trophy is awarded.
Ellen needs to take medications and food periodically to restore her health. Her health must always be in the green or yellow zone and not in the red zone, otherwise she complains that she feels too unwell to continue. Up to 3 lots of medications and food can be combined. Whiskey and sleeping pills have negative health effects. Apples and pears have positive health effects. Some combinations can yield positive or negative synergistic health effects that are above and beyond their addictive health effects. In the Vambery manor, Ellen can take as many apples and pears as she can carry from the kitchen.

Go to the desk. Turn around. Examine the list on the desk. Learn that the 16th painting is an untitled painting by Kaneyek. The list references the painting to a book with the call number A III 07.
Go to the wall of bookshelves. Examine the bookshelves. Learn that the lower bookshelf is labeled VIII. Learn that the call numbers for books adjacent to the left side of the hallway all begin with B. Move the ladder to the far left by the window. Look at the bookshelf directly above the top of the ladder. Learn that the book with the call number A III 07 is missing. A book with the call number C II 15 is there instead.
Move the ladder over the hallway. Look at the lowest bookshelf at the top of the left side of the ladder (Figure 3). The book with the call number A III 07 is there. Examine the book. The book is titled "A Guide to Building Model Ships". Use the viewer to read the text. Notice the letters f, i, v, and o on the page that have a period under them. Together, they reveal a partial call number F IV 0 (Figure 4).
Use the scalpel to cut the 4 corners of the slide taped to the page. Take the slide. Use the viewer on the lower picture of a ship. Ellen finds the message "The Dark Key" on the sail. She recognizes it to be the name of a ship. Notice the number 5 on the page previously hidden under the slide that has a period under it. Therefore, the complete call number is F IV 05.
(Note: Each dot under the letter and the message on the sail must be clicked on to show on the left side of the page in order to it to be registered.)
Go to the left side of the bookshelf behind the desk. Look at the books from the lower bookshelf to the left. Ellen finds a book titled "Dracula" by Bram Stoker. Remove this book and the book next to it from the bookshelf. Examine the back of the bookshelf. Ellen finds a keyhole previously hidden behind the books.
Turn right. Go to the balcony. Notice the model ship hanging high up in the ceiling. Look at the framed musket beneath the model ship. Notice a compass rose on the floor beneath the model ship. Pull back the left curtain to reveal a black switchbox. Examine the switchbox. A set of removable gears and 2 controls are inside the switchbox.
Ellen needs to use switchbox to turn the model ship around and to lower it. The compass rose shows the direction toward which the model ship needs to be pointing. Rearrange the removable gears to align them so they turn the right fixed gear at the top. Turn the black knob at the bottom to the right. Turn the steering wheel at the bottom until the marker on the right is pointing upwards (Figure 5). Rearrange the removable gears to align them so they turn the left fixed gear at the top. Do not turn the black knob again. Turn the steering wheel until the marker on the left is fully down (Figure 6).

Go back to the library. Use the flashlight on the door. Enter the secret office.
Secret office
Turn around. Examine the fuse box to the left of the doorway. The fuses in the fuse box are blown. Use the new fuses on the fuse box.
Ellen needs to rearrange the bus bars inside the fuse box to get power to the 5 lights in the center of the fuse box (Figure 7). She then needs to place the 10 power blocks in the correct slots so that the dots on the blocks match the dots on the corresponding sides of the slots in the fuse box (similar to a game of matching dominoes). When done correctly, the light in the bottom right of the fuse box will be lit ("Amateur detective" trophy).
Turn right. There are 3 small monitors and 1 large monitor linked to video feeds from security cameras elsewhere in the manor. Click on the start button of the large monitor to turn it on. Click on the columns of buttons to find out where the security cameras are placed.
Clicking on the buttons in the far left column shows a video feed from the entrance. Clicking on the buttons in the near left column shows a video feed from the hallway. Clicking on the buttons in the middle column shows a video feed from the library. Clicking on the buttons in the near right column shows a video feed displaying a Latin engraving from somewhere in the manor.
Click on the correct button to show the engraving on the large monitor. Look at the large monitor. The engraving reads, "Requiem aeternam dona eis, et lux perpetua luceat eis."
Turn right. Look at the old photo of the manor on the wall. Ellen notes that the manor from the photo looks odd. Ellen notes that she needs to take a closer look at the manor facade. Take the bottle of vitamins, the bottle of hydrogen peroxide, and the Medal of Saint Benedict on the table. Look at the letter on the table partially obscured by a large ink stain. Combine (in the inventory) the container full of water with bleach. Combine (in the inventory) the diluted bleach with hydrogen peroxide to get a bottle of ink remover. Use the bottle of ink remover twice on the stain to remove it. Read the letter. Learn about the burial plot of Professor Vambery's parents, the Wanbergers.

Go to the Wanberger mausoleum. Look at the engraving across the top of the mausoleum. Use the shears on the ivy covering up the gate. Use the key on the gate. Enter the mausoleum.
Mausoleum
Look at the engraving. This is the same engraving displayed in the video feed from the security camera.
Look at the 3 circles below the engraving. Ellen needs to reassemble the engraved pieces of the circles to restore the correct pattern of markings for each circle (Figure 8). The pieces can be switched between different circles by clicking on the 2 metal rosettes adjacent to the circles. The circles can be rotated by clicking on the 3 diamond shaped buttons in the center of the circles. When done correctly, a plate on the floor opens up to reveal an opening to the crypt. It is too high to go down, however.
Ellen feels unwell again and needs to take her medications urgently. Combine (in the inventory) 1 red and white pill with 1 blue pill. Swallow the medications. Combine (in the inventory) 1 apple with 1 pear. Swallow the food.
There is a tomb on each side of the engraving. Turn left. Look at the left tomb. Use the metal bar twice on the left tomb to open it. Open the bag. Take the rope ladder and the pickaxe. Look at the right tomb. It cannot be opened. Use the rope ladder on the opening. Climb down to the crypt.
Crypt
Turn left. Take the terra cotta pot on the ground. Turn right. Take the bone on the ground. Search the ground carefully. Take the 3 stone snakes on the ground.
There are 3 doors leading from the crypt. Only 1 door can be opened at a time. Notice the dirt mount in front of the middle door. Examine the dirt mount. A stone circle is found hidden beneath it. The stone circle is made up of 3 concentric rings, each of which is engraved with multiple symbols and can be rotated independently. Use the 3 stone snakes on the 3 empty slots in the stone circle. Ellen needs to rotate the rings of the stone circle into the correct positions to unlock each of the doors.
Right door
Go to the right door. Look above the doorway. Notice the pattern of symbols engraved above the doorway (Figure 9). Go back to the dirt mount. Rotate the rings to match the pattern of symbols for the right door (Figure 10). Hear the right door grate open. Go to the open door. Look inside the chamber. Use the terra cotta pot on the snake. Use the knife on the strip of cloth on the skeleton to remove a strip of tissue. Take the antique flask containing oil.

Go forward. Turn left. Use the lit torch on the torch holder on the wall. Turn right. There is a Latin engraving on the wall. Examine the engraving. The engraving reads, "IHS VADE RETRO SATANA.NUMQVAM SVADE MIHI VANA SUNT MALA QVAE LIBAS IPSE VENENA BIBAS".
Turn around. Examine the lock on the door. Use the Medal of Saint Benedict on the lock. Look at the Medal of Saint Benedict. Notice that the string of letters from the engraving on the medal partially matches the strings of letters formed by the first word and the first letter of the remaining words from the engraving on the wall (IHSVRSNSMVSMQLIVB). Therefore, the letters that are missing from the engraving on the medal are SMVSM.
Ellen needs to match the letters in the ring of the lock clockwise to the string of letters from the engraving on the medal so that the entire string of letters on the ring also matches the string of letters from the engraving on the wall (Figure 15).
Click on the 2 arrow plates in the center to rotate the ring clockwise or counterclockwise a letter at a time. Click on the 4 button fasteners to swap the adjacent letters in the corresponding quadrant. When done correctly, the door opens. Enter the vault ("Vambery's secrets" trophy).
Vault
The bust on a pedestal is covered. Take the strap from the cover. Remove the cover. It is a bust of Vlad Tepes (Dracula). Notice the partially hidden Rumanian flag hanging beside the shelves. The flag is colored blue, yellow, and red. Look at the wooden chest on the ground. Examine the combination lock on the chest. Match the colors of the combination lock to the colors of the flag from left to right (Figure 16). When done correctly, the chest opens ("Real adventurer" trophy).
An alarm is sounded. The door to the vault closes. Ellen panics when she learns that she is now trapped inside the vault.
Ellen feels unwell again and needs to take her medications urgently. Combine (in the inventory) 1 red and white capsule with 1 blue tablet. Swallow the medications. Combine (in the inventory) 1 blue and white capsule with 1 blue tablet. Swallow the medications.
Take the broken wax cylinder, a short piece of string, the silver bullets, and a leather box. Examine the box on the shelf. Take 3 lots of vitamins.

Turn right. Take the strip of metal from the top of the barrel. Turn left. Take the knotted rope, pliers, and the lock-picking hook on the bench. Go back to Yanek's house.
Yanek's house
Ellen inserts the lock-picking hook into the lock. Combine (in the inventory) the strip of metal with the pliers to get the tension tool. Use the tension tool on the lock. Ellen needs to pick the lock by moving the lock-picking hook in and out of the lock in the correct steps so that the tension tool can be pulled all the way downward to open the lock (Figure 17-22).
The lock-picking tool can be in 5 different positions, guided by the number of teeth in the tool that are visible outside the lock. The tension tool can be in 6 different positions, guided by the vertical position of the tool outside the lock. When done correctly, the door opens ("Experienced burglar" trophy). Enter the door.
Step | Lock-picking hook | Tension tool |

Take the broken puppet. Go back to the alcove.
Ellen needs to make a new puppet arm to repair the broken puppet (Figure 23). Look at the workbench. Use the paintbrush on the yellow paint and then the red paint to get the orange paint. Use the paintbrush to paint the sleeve orange. Use the paintbrush on the water bowl to clean the paintbrush. Use the paintbrush on the blue paint. Use the paintbrush to paint the cuff blue. Do not paint the hand. Use the scalpel to carefully cut out the puppet arm ("Steady hand" trophy). Combine (in the inventory) the broken puppet with the new puppet arm. Go back to the puppet theater.
Use the repaired puppet on the puppet theater. Look at the puppet theater. Ellen needs to move the puppets in the correct sequence so that the puppet with the key opens the locked box underneath the hot air balloon. Move, in order, the puppet on the boat near the shore, the puppet on the boat under the sun, the puppet with the knife, the puppet with the drum, the puppet in the hot air balloon, and finally the puppet with the key. When done correctly, a door opens next to the puppet theater to reveal a secret storage room ("Puppeteer" trophy). Enter the secret storage room.
Secret storage room
Take the rod in front of the covered painting. Use the camera to take a photo of the "Lilith" painting.
Living room
Turn right. Notice a painting covered in red paint. Examine the painting. Turn around. Take the sponge and the paint solvent from the table. Combine (in the inventory) the solvent with the sponge. Use the soaked sponge twice on the painting. It reveals to be the "Brueghel" painting from the missing Vambery collection. Use the camera to take a photo of the "Brueghel" painting.
Turn left. Move the room divider blocking the stairs. Go upstairs to the bedroom.
Bedroom
Go forward. Turn left. Examine the octagonal bedside stand. Ellen needs to turn the 3 rings so that the mosaic pattern on the rings will align correctly with each other and with the fixed center. Turning the outer ring clockwise or counterclockwise turns the middle ring in the opposite direction. Turning the middle ring clockwise or counterclockwise turns the inner ring in the same direction only. Turning the inner ring clockwise or counterclockwise does not turn the middle or outer ring. Turn the rings to align the 3 stars of the same color (blue, green, red, and yellow) to match the colored tile in the center in each quadrant (Figure 24). When done correctly, a panel in the stand opens to reveal a secret compartment. Take the hook hidden inside the stand.
Turn left. Look up to the ceiling. Examine the attic door. Combine (in the inventory) the rod with the hook. Use the hooked rod on the attic door to open it. Climb up to the attic.

Ellen deduces that a painting from the missing Vambery collection is inside the case. There is a lock on the case. Take the case. Turn right. Open the curtain hanging on the wall. Ellen discovers a dead man on the floor. Examine the dead man's body. Look at the mark above his left wrist. There is a dragon tattoo above his wrist. The pockets in his clothes are empty. Use the camera to take a photo of the body.
Ellen hears footsteps below the attic. Close the attic door. Turn around. Look at the unbarred window. The window is locked by a padlock. Use the screwdriver on the 2 screws holding the metal bracket holding the padlock. Combine (in the inventory) the rope with the knotted rope to get a long rope. Use the long rope on the window. Climb out the window. Ellen returns to her hotel room.
Hotel room
Go to the bedside stand. Use the phone. Call the police. Ellen hears only a recorded message. Call the museum. Ellen talks to the museum director. He advises Ellen not to contact the police about the murder until after she has left Istanbul. Turn right. Examine the lock on the case. The lock has 25 square buttons arranged in a 5x5 grid.
Ellen needs to press the correct buttons in the grid so that the column and row totals of the pressed buttons match the number of punch holes in the corresponding columns and rows adjacent to top and right edges of the grid (Figure 25). When done correctly, the case opens. Ellen finds the 16th painting from the missing Vambery collection ("300!!" trophy).
The final cinematic cut scene is played. The painting is a portrait of Dracula. The game ends with a teaser trailer for "Dracula 4" ("The End !" trophy).
(Hint: View the final credits to be awarded a trophy ("Thank you" trophy).)
