There is a workaround for the "feature" I mentioned in my previous comment (as Steve E) way back in 2002. It's the "Unlock cage with ring" bug in the Infocom Bugs List under Zork III. When I obtain a phantom ring with this workaround, I don't have to go back in time, risking the low probability of getting fried by a guard, and getting kicked out of the game. This way I can proceed without saving the game. Still, if not for this unfair and totally unnecessary random death, I would rate Zork III with a 4 instead of a 2.
I have a complaint about a feature (or bug) in Zork III that I haven't encountered in any other infocom text adventure.
There is a 1-in-5 chance of a random death that can occur at one point in the game, even if I do everything right, and this particular death exits the game. So even FROTZing this game doesn't help here. I always save before performing this act.
