There are many kinds of horror fiction. There are numerous subgenres, each with a specific set of narrative devices and a certain amount of well-tried clichés. The scares are evoked by showing flashes of horrible monsters, playing with light and darkness, or having terrifying danger to suddenly appear around the corner. The game worked fine on windows XP. I just had to uninstall quicktime and install the quicktime 3.0 on the game disc.

This game is timeless. It has aged, but this just makes it more surreal. There will never be another game like it. Still, it's a little overrated considering there's no puzzles so to speak and you need to be aware of Poe's work to truly appreciate it.

Thanks, Igor. I do run '98SE, so there is no reason why I can't take advantage of the first alternative you propose.

Dark Eye has worked on my Win 98SE that i used before XP. The only requirement is to install the (very) old Quicktime version that is included with the game. It can rather harmlessly coexist with newer versions if that is of concern. A more complicated, but not without it's merits alternative is to use an Macintosh emulator (if you own the same hybrid version of Dark Eye as me). On Mac the game offers better composition and quality of visual elements. The emulator I would recommend for Dark Eye is called Basilisk II JIT. To use it you will need to obtain a Mac ROM and one of the freewere old MAC OS systems (from the versions 7 to 8).

The technical specs you list simply say Windows 3.1 or higher. I know the game (which I own but but never played) was written for Win '95. I run Win '98 and Win XP, which of course offers DOSBox, but I can't create a partition for '95 because '95 can't recognize my wireless mouse and keyboard. Do you know if Dark Eye runs under '98? If not, do you know if there are any emulators in existence for Win '95?
