"Why mess with success?" may well describe the thoughts of the designers of Riven: The Sequel to Myst. Myst is arguably a controversial title among fans of adventure games. Both its proponents and opponents are numerous. Some hail it as the ultimate surrealistic interactive experience, while others fault it as just a fancy slideshow with eccentric puzzles. Yet, no one can ignore the incredible…

I reached the stone pillar puzzle and never made it across. I solved everything till that myself and I can't force myself to read a cheat code. Its been 4 years since I played Riven and it still haunts me...
..The game is simply incredible. The game has been made to put you in the players shoe, no animated flash backs etc, you will have to read books and find your way through with keen observation and mental acuity, just as you would if you woke up one day in a new world with a new language, culture and numbering system.
THE BEST EVER.
I lost the number 3 cd for Riven the sequel to Myst
Riven is head and shoulders above any visual adventure game, past, present, and possibly future! It is a brilliant marriage of difficult puzzles and beautiful imagery that I have not experienced in any other game to date. In my experience, the only game I have loved as much was the original Zork I text-based adventure game, played on a Dec20 mainframe system whilst I was a university student at U.N.E in the 1980's. However, Zork: Nemesis, and Obsidian were 2 other graphical adventure games that were almost as good in different ways.
I strongly urge anyone who might like this sort of game to play it, but I also recommend that the gamer consider "cutting their adventure-game teeth" on easier games first, lest they give up, as Riven demands both serious patience and some experience.
Is there a "sample play" or "try out" before purchasing? My mother who has surprised us all by obtaining a computer has sworn to me this is THEE game to play. She has difficulty describing it though. What can you recommend?
Disk 4 of my game was damaged is there any way of obtaining a copy of it.
Myst 4 GAME WERE I MIGHT FIND A CHEPER PRICE OF MYST 4
Quote: "One of the two possible endings in Riven: The Lost Episodes does not appear in full in the version 1.0 release. In the original ending, if the player fails to trap Gehn before opening the Star Fissure, the game is lost. Atrus will arrive and ask the player where Catherine and the book are. As a dawning horror appears on his face, he says, "I don't understand!" "You never did!" cries Gehn, appearing behind him with a guard. At a signal from as the world crumbles, Atrus is killed by a blowgun dart. Gehn retrieves the Linking Book--his gateway back to D'ni and freedom--and then walks close to the player, smiling. "I don't know what you thought you were doing," he says, vastly amused, "but... thank you!" Gesturing with the book, he adds, "I finally am... free..." He then signals the guard, who shoots the player with a blowgun dart. The player falls into darkness as a world dies. In the final release, this entire sequence is lost. Instead, the player simply falls through the Star Fissure. (source: Official Riven: The Sequel to Myst Hints and Solutions)"
What? This ending IS in my version. Also, when Gehn appears, Atrus says, "Father." Gehn exclaims, "Father!? I'm not your FATHER, for you are no longer my son!." Then he orders his guard to shoot him.
