I don't agree about the Monkey Island series having been "fairly carefree" to this point - it was always a mixture of carefree and darker moments. In fact even this more intense Tales of Monkey Island episode is much lighter in tone than many scenes from the first two MI games - full of rotting corpses, victims of LeChuck, talking severed heads, infernal undergrounds. A huge portion of the main story in LeChuck's Revenge revolved around the sordid fates of the original crew that found the treasure of Big Whoop - they all vanished or died in troubling circumstances. The various twists and turns in the plot were also definitely ominous.
